Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the cost of the Moose program?

The expected cost of the program for the 2010-2011 season is as follows:

League and Team Tuition: 

Junior A: $6,000 (plus apparal & travel) 
Midget AAA split-season: TBD
Transportation and Lodging: To be billed throughout the season.
Billet Housing (if applicable): $350 per month

2. How is team travel handled?
The teams will travel by motor coach to all away games except Maine and New Hampshire. Players will reside in hotels during overnight stays (4 per room).

3. What are the goals of the Maine Moose program?

The goals of the Moose program are to:
1) Advance the individual in his hockey skills
2) Advance the individual in off-ice workouts
3) Prepare the individual academically for a post secondary education; and
4) To advance the individual in citizenship skills.

4. How many games and practices will the program offer?
The Super Elite program will include up to 50-60 league and non-league games, which includes 3-4 college showcase tournaments and league playoffs. Players will receive 100 plus hours of on-ice instruction, as well as, 100 plus hours of off-ice training.

The Midget AAA team plays approximately 25 games, including several showcase tournaments.

5. Will the team offer a private locker room?
The Junior A team has a private locker room at the Kennebec Ice Arena.

6. Where will the Moose practice and play their games?
The Moose will practice and play their games at the 1,000 seat (NHL ice dimension) Kennebec Ice Arena located in Hallowell, Maine.

7. Will players be required to take college classes?

Yes, all post grad players will be required to take 1-2 classes per semester. They will also be required to take lifeskill classes that will teach the athletes such things as financial responsibility and drug awareness. They will also be required to be involved with the community.

8. What does my tuition include?
Tuition for Junior A players includes ice time for games and practices, off-ice training, membership at local health club, use of game jerseys and shells.  Players will purchase apparal package, which includes: equipment bags, warm up suits/team jackets, game socks, practice jerseys, practice socks, baseball hat and t-shirt. Players will also receive reduced prices on merchandise at the Kennebec Skate Shop.

9. How will the housing situation be handled?
For those players from away (who are not able to stay with their own families), there will be pre-selected billet families that will meet the players and their families at training camp

10. What are the dates of training camp and what will it be like?
Training camp will be an intensive week-long program in late August. It will include a combination of skill development, on and off-ice instruction, strength conditioning, classroom work, and a scrimmage at the end of each day. Exhibition games against other junior teams in Canada and the U.S. will typically follow training camp.

11. Will there be a team dress code?
Yes, the team will have to adhere to a strict dress code for all games, home and away. There will also be a code of conduct, which players will have to abide by.

12. What will be the composition of the roster?
There will be approximately 25 active players on each team’s active roster. The determination of actual composition of players at positions will be determined at training camp.

13. What is the tryout format?
The tryout format will for the most part be simulated games, with some drills,and some off ice testing, over a two day period.

14. Will there be job assistance for players looking for job opportunities?

Yes, the Moose will help their student athletes with possible job opportunities in the community.

15. What are the payment terms?
Players and their parents have two choices for payments:
1) Full payment at selection
2) Deposit at selection plus installment payments over four months, but prior to the start of training camp.

16. What League do the Moose play in?
The Junior A team will play in the Super Elite division of International Junior Hockey League (IJHL), with teams throughout the Northeast US. The Midget AAA team will be a affiliate member of the IJHL Elite division and play in the State of Maine league and regional tournaments.

18. Are the Moose USA Hockey Certified?
All Moose players and coaches will be registered with USA Hockey.  The Junior A team is also registered with NAAHA.
